April 2015: Cherry Blossom Festival, Washignton DC

Here's the thing about the Washington DC Cherry Blossoms: You never know when the bell of the ball is going to show up.

We decided to go during the Cherry Blossom Festival and hope the cherry trees got the memo.

Before settling in to our Greenbelt, Maryland campground we drove up to Baltimore to see the famous Frank of Frank's Trailer Works. What a treat to finally meet him and admire his shop! One of these days we hope to camp with him, too.

Smore is checking out the campground in Greenbelt Maryland.

No power. No water.  It's boondocking for 8 days with the additional challenge of being presentable during the day. I don't think I would try this in the summer.

So much to see!  No time to waste!  We headed to the National Mall straightaway.  In the dark.

The night turned to day.  The day into night.
We walked.

We gawked.

We marveled.

This watchmaker's daughter was delighted to see the Orville Wright's plane and pocket watch.

We remembered.

Eleanor, larger than life, as she should be.
Yes, dear daughter, I'll take your picture with her.

I'm not sure the intended effect was giggling.  We couldn't help ourselves.
Any temptation to try it out was curbed by the cold.

We pinched ourselves.  Are we really here?!

We learned.

Oh, look.  Here's the clothes of Henry Higgins and Eliza Doolittle.

Our Sabrina is an Audry Hepburn fan; she got her name from the movie "Sabrina."

Think these ruby slippers work in reverse?

"There's no place like a road trip. There's no place like a road trip."

Hey, look! Boys can buck rivets, too.

Julia Child's kitchen.

FLAMINGOS!

See the teeny tiny White House back there?

Someone is on his way home.

Hello, Mr. President!

I cannot tell a lie.

I spied a cherry tree bloom at Mt. Vernon.

At Arlington, we set out to find my great great uncle who died in World War One. We did our research ahead of time.  It's a good thing, too. My family called him "Clarence."

He died a week before his 26th birthday.  I thought it was kind of strange that Arlington didn't know his birthday.  It's on his draft card.   I told them his birthday.  They researched the information I gave them.  Later, they emailed. When Clarence is due for a new headstone it will include his birthday. Mission accomplished.

We walked some more.

We imagined the Tidal Basin cherry tree beauties in full bloom.

On the way out of town we stopped briefly at the other Air and Space Museum, Udvar-Hazy.

We wowed.

A last minute surprise in the parking lot?

Cherry Blossoms!

 Up and down.
Around.
In and out.
All over town.
How could eight days pass so fast?
